Legislative Activity

Since the 1990s, the Coalition for Education Equity (formerly CEAAC), has worked to address inadequacies in rural Alaska schools through the courts and legislative activity. We advocate for education reform at the legislative level and have a strong track record that has resulted in protecting education funding, establishing and sustaining pre-kindergarten programs across the state, school construction funding, opportunities for regional learning centers, and protection of our small schools. You can learn more about our accomplishments here.

We have a lot of work ahead of us this year to protect education funds from further cuts and will work with our legislators to ensure they are making budget decisions that support our values and adequately invest in Alaska's schools. Our efforts will also seek to sustain and expand pre-elementary programs, improve broadband access for school districts, increase teacher recruitment and retention, restore the debt reimbursement program, continue funding schools on the school construction list, and spur investment in major maintenance projects currently stalled on the DEED’s School Major Maintenance List. See our full list of legislative priorities here.

The Coalition for Education Equity acknowledges that our State budget cannot continue to be funded at current levels without additional revenue. If we want sustainable, consistent education funding, we must advocate for revenue generating options. See our position statement on revenue here.
